How Colorado home construction is changing — and what to look for
Colorado home construction is moving toward higher-performance envelopes, main-level living, and better mountain-site logistics. Here is how to evaluate a contractor against that.

Colorado residential construction is not the same as it was a decade ago. Three trends stand out.
Higher-performance envelopes. More air sealing, more continuous insulation, better window packages. A house that stays comfortable at -10°F and 95°F costs less to run and is more pleasant to live in.
Main-level living. Aging-in-place is driving primary suites on the main floor even in new builds, and single-story additions that used to be second-story additions.
Serious mountain-site logistics. More owners are building in the foothills and beyond. That requires contractors who plan around winter access, wildfire mitigation and utility feasibility rather than assuming a suburban lot.
How to evaluate a contractor. Ask how they handle change orders. Ask how they coordinate specialty trades. Ask how they handle a site that fails inspection. The answers are more revealing than any award or badge.
